the 2021 Venice Biennale

Korean Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale

The 17th Architecture Biennale opens in Venice on May 22, 2021.

The design theme of this pavilion is to imagine the “school of the future”, redefining the archetypal educational institution as a place of connection and exchange. Each of the students participating in this exhibition represents a city, among which I represent Beijing.

The inspiration for my project is about sound, and the shape of the brick determines the transparency of the sound. I think that if we want to live together, we need not only to connect with each other, but also not to be disturbed by each other. So I want to make a brick to insulate each other from being disturbed (wall bricks for sound insulation). You can communicate with the other side through the hole in the wall, or you can use the wall without holes to isolate the sound from the other side.

What is future school?

Future School converts the Korean Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia into an international incubator for radical thinking–a meeting place to exchange and encounter ideas and projects that actively explore the notion of building a better future.

A global coalition of people, places, concepts and practices, Future School connects participants and programmes across borders and distance while fostering diverse modes of engagement. The ultimate aim is to forge new and multiple solidarities in the face of current and future challenges, including migration and the growth of the diaspora, the impact of climate change, and the increasing speed of social and technological change
